New York, NY - Josh Childress, who helped lead the Stanford basketball team to three NCAA Tournament appearances and a Pac-10 Championship (2004), was selected as a first round pick of the Atlanta Hawks during the 2004 NBA Draft on Thursday.
Childress becomes the highest Stanford player taken in the NBA Draft. Childress was picked sixth overall in Thursday's two-round draft. Rich Kelley was the seventh overall pick by the New Orleans Jazz in 1975. Childress also becomes the ninth Stanford player to be picked in the first round. Childress also is the Pac-10's highest first round selection since UCLA's Baron Davis was the third overall pick by the Charlotte Hornets in 1999.
During the 2003-04 season, Childress was named to nine All-America teams, including six first team choices. Childress, who averaged 15.7 points and 7.5 rebounds per game, became the first Stanford player to be named Pac-10 Player of the Year (2004).
While at Stanford (2001-02, 2002-03, 2003-04), Childress helped the Cardinal to a 74-21 overrall record, and a 43-11 record in the Pac-10.
Childress was one of four Pac-10 players selected. Andre Iguodala of Arizona was selected in the first round by the Philadelphia 76ers (ninth overall pick), Oregon's Luke Jackson was picked by the Cleveland Cavaliers (tenth overall pick) in the first round, and UCLA's Trevor Ariza was taken in the second round by the New York Knicks.
During the last five years, five Stanford players, including Childress in 2004, have been first round picks; Mark Madsen (Los Angeles Lakers in 2000), Jason Collins (Houston Rockets in 2001), Curtis Borchardt (Utah Jazz in 2002) and Casey Jacobsen (Phoenix Suns in 2003).
Childress ended his three-year Cardinal career with 1,061 points. Childress' name appears 17 times in the Stanford record book.
