Indiana Holds Off Stanford, 2-1

Aug. 29, 2004

Box Score

Stanford, Calif. - Indiana (1-1) staked itself to a two-goal lead and then held off Stanford (0-2) in a non-conference field hockey match at the Varsity Field Hockey Turf on Sunday. The contest was scoreless until Morgan Miller finished off a penalty corner with assists by Lydia Schrott and Meredith Brown at 52:10. The Hoosiers then added an insurance goal they would need when Kate O'Connell received a pass from Mallory Reabold right in front of the cage and sent a shot by Cardinal goalkeeper Ana Kralovec to put Indiana in front 2-0 at the 65:52 mark.

Stanford's Missy Halliday cut the margin in half when she navigated through the Hoosier defense and scored an unassisted goal at 67:54 but the Cardinal could not find the net again in its second straight loss to open the 2004 campaign.

"It's disappointing," admitted Stanford head coach Lesley Irvine. "I thought we had some momentum at several points in the game and created opportunities, but we just need to finish. We show glimpses of what we are capable of, but we need to do that for 70 minutes. The opportunities are there, we just need to put it all together."

Indiana outshot Stanford, 16-5, and held a 5-1 advantage in penalty corners.

Three Indiana players - Miller, Reabold and Schrott - each took a game-high-tying three shots, while Jessica Zutz led the Cardinal with a pair of shot attempts.

Kralovec (0-2) recorded a game-high six saves despite suffering her second consecutive loss in goal. Indiana goalkeeper Katie Kanara (1-1) picked up the victory but was denied a shutout on Halliday's late goal. Kanara finished with three saves.

Stanford continues its season-opening five-game homestand next week by hosting Providence (Tuesday, August 31), Boston University (Saturday, September 4) and Louisville (Sunday, September 5). All three games are scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm, PT.
