Berkeley, Calif. - A pair of second half goals from Darren Fernandez and Todd Leber led Stanford to a 2-0 win over San Diego in Berkeley on Sunday. With the victory, the Cardinal claimed a share of the Cal-Legacy Classic title along with the host Bears. Stanford improves to 3-0-1, while the Toreros fall to 2-2-0.

San Diego out-shot the Cardinal in the first half, pelting the Stanford goal with five shots in the opening period. The Cardinal struck first in the second half, with senior Darren Fernandez taking a Bret Shimizu pass and scoring his second goal of the season at the 68:30 mark. It was the 19th goal of Fernandez' career, moving him into a tie with teammate Matt Janusz as the team's active career goals scored leader. Stanford added an insurance goal in the 88th minute, with Janusz assisting on the first goal of senior Todd Leber's collegiate career.

The Cardinal defense was superb once again, with sophomore goalkeeper Andrew Kartunen posting his fourth straight shutout to begin the 2004 campaign. The shutout marks the first time since the 2000 season that a Stanford squad has begun the season with four clean sheets. In 2000, the Cardinal posted six straight shutouts to begin the season en route to an 18-3-1 record and a trip to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament.

San Diego out-shot Stanford by a 9-7 margin for the game, and sophomore goalkeeper Lance Friesz made four saves in net for the Toreros. Kartunen collected three saves for the Cardinal, while San Diego's Kevin Wilson attempted a game-high three shots.

Four Stanford players were named to the Cal-Legacy Classic All Tournament team, with Kartunen sharing tournament MVP honors with Cal defender Noah Merl. Fernandez, Leber, and senior James Twellman were also named to the All Tournament squad.

Stanford will travel to southern California next weekend to participate in the SoccerTown Classic, hosted by Cal State Fullerton. The Cardinal will take on UC Irvine at 5:00 pm on Friday and face the host Titans at 7:00 pm on Sunday.
