Lincoln, Neb. - Freshman Lizzy George (Alamo, Calif./Carondelet) scored the first goal of her collegiate career this afternoon as the Cardinal took a 1-0 victory over Nebraska at the Abbott Sports Complex. Junior Leah Tapscott (Madison, Wis./James Madison Memorial) sent a cross across the box that George fired into the net for the goal in the 36th minute. The Cardinal improve to 3-2 on the year, while Nebraska drops to 3-3.
"We were obviously disappointed to not do well in the Notre Dame Tournament," noted head coach Paul Ratcliffe after today's win, "But we're proud of how we finished up. This was a long road trip and we feel lucky to have won the last two because they were hard fought games against two good teams. We're hoping to build on these wins for our tournament next weekend."
Senior Nicole Barnhart (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) posted her second-straight shutout of the season and picked up five saves in goal.
On Friday, the Cardinal will welcome Cal State Fullerton, Yale and Santa Clara to The Farm for the Stanford Invitational. The tournament will open with a 5 p.m. match-up between Santa Clara and Yale before the Cardinal takes on the Titans at 7:30 p.m. at Maloney Field. Next Sunday, the Broncos will face Cal State Fullerton in the 11 a.m. contest and Stanford will close the tournament with a 1:30 p.m. match versus the Bulldogs.
