Stanford, Calif. - Stanford earned its fourth win of the season tonight as senior Marcie Ward (Alamo, Calif./Carondelet) scored a pair of goals against Cal State Fullerton in the Stanford Nike Invitational. Ward's goals gave the Cardinal a 2-0 win, bringing Stanford's record to 4-2-0 on the season, while Fullerton drops to 2-4-0. In the first game of the tournament Santa Clara defeated Yale, 2-0.

Ward, who also scored two goals against Utah in Stanford's home opener on Aug. 27, tallied the first score late in the first half. The co-captain took a pass from fellow senior Martha West (Fort Worth, Texas/Forth Worth Country Day) and dribbled up the field, beating the defenders for the goal. Ward scored her fourth goal of the season with just over three minutes left in the game, as she took the ball from junior Leah Tapscott (Madison, Wis./James Madison Memorial) and punched into the opposite side of the net.

"It was a great team win," noted head coach Paul Ratcliffe. "The entire team played really well and we created a lot of great chances. Fullerton made a lot of saves, but we were able to come away with the win tonight."

The Cardinal out-shot the Titans 12-5 on the day, while Stanford keeper Nicole Barnhart (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) picked up three saves.

Earlier in the day, Santa Clara upended Yale, 2-0, in the first game of the Stanford Nike Invitational. The Broncos and Bulldogs were even until Santa Clara scored on a penalty kick at just three minutes into the second half. The Broncos out-shot Yale, 8-0, in the final 45 minutes and scored their second goal on a double-assisted shot by Bree Horvath. Yale goalie Sarah Walker ended the day with six saves. Santa Clara improves to 3-2-1, while Yale drops its first match of the year and falls to 5-1-0.

On Sunday, Santa Clara and Cal State Fullerton will face off at 11 a.m. before Stanford takes on Yale at 1:30 p.m. Both games will be played at Maloney Field.
