Stanford, Calif. - Stanford defeated Yale, 1-0, this afternoon in a tightly contested match-up at Maloney Field to earn a share of the Stanford Nike Invitational title. Santa Clara posted a 1-0 win over Cal State Fullerton in the morning game to tie the Cardinal for the tournament crown (each team won two matches with a combined score of 3-0).

Stanford, now 5-2 on the season, posted its lone goal of the day when Marcie Ward (Alamo, Calif./Carondelet) fed Martha West (Fort Worth, Texas/Forth Worth Country Day) in the 76th minute. The two also teamed up for the game-winner against Fullerton on Friday night, with Ward notching the goal and West tagging the assist. Yale came into the tournament with a perfect record, but leaves California with a 5-2 mark.

"This was a very good win against a very well organized Yale team," noted head coach Paul Ratcliffe. " We showed great patience and perseverance and we ended up with a great goal when Martha put a great finish on Marcie's pass. We're really pleased with this result because Yale is a great team."

Stanford created a lot of opportunities on offense this afternoon with six shots on goal, but Yale keeper Sarah Walker picked up five saves to keep the Bulldogs on pace with the Cardinal. Stanford keeper Nicole Barnhart (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) added one save on the day as she earned her fourth-straight shutout.

In the first game of the day, Santa Clara earned its second-straight victory on a game-winning penalty kick by Leslie Osborne. The Broncos drew the foul at 23:40 and Osborne converted the kick to put Santa Clara up, 1-0. Both teams had a series of chances throughout the match, but with six saves from SCU's Julie Ryder and a three-save effort from Fullerton's Nicole Williams, neither team was able to convert another shot from the field.

Stanford will travel to Santa Clara next weekend as the Broncos host the Cardinal, Denver and Marquette. Stanford will face Denver on Friday at 5 p.m., before matching up against Marquette on Sunday at 11 a.m. Stanford and Santa Clara will meet up the following week, when the Cardinal visits Buck Shaw Stadium on Thurs., Sept. 30.
