Top-Ranked Stanford Wins Two Games At Southern California Tournament

Los Angeles, Ca - Tony Azevedo tallied five goals while Thomas Hopkins and Tyler Drake added two apiece to lead the top-ranked and unbeaten Stanford water polo team to a 16-5 victory over #12 UC San Diego during first day action (Saturday night) at the Southern California Tournament.

The Cardinal, 4-0, raced to a 5-1 first period lead and expanded the margin to 9-2 at halftime. Ten players scored at least one goal for Stanford.

Earlier in the day, Hopkins and Peter Varellas each scored three goals to lead the Cardinal to a 13-3 victory over sixth-ranked Long Beach State. Stanford jumped to a 6-1 first period lead and extended it to 9-3 at halftime. Azevedo, the three-time National Player of the Year, returned to the Cardinal varsity after a brief rest from competing at the recent Summer Olympics to score two goals.

Stanford moves into Sunday's championship semifinals against third-ranked UCLA. Game time is 11:45 a.m. at USC's McDonald's Swim Stadium. If Stanford wins, the Cardinal would play in the championship game at 6 p.m. The other championship game features second-ranked USC vs third-ranked California at 10:30 a.m.

The Southern California Tournament features 14 of the nation's top 20 teams, including the top seven teams in the nation.

Cardinal Catalogue: Tony Azevedo, a three-time All-American, now has 260 career goals, #1 all-time in school history ... With five goals scored in two games on Saturday, Thomas Hopkins remains the team leader in scoring with 17 goals ...
