Fullerton, Calif. - Senior James Twellman scored on a penalty kick in the 56th minute to propel Stanford to a 2-1 win over Cal State Fullerton on Sunday evening. With the victory, the Cardinal claimed the title of the SoccerTown Classic and improve to 5-0-1 on the season, while the Titans fall to 0-5-1.
Stanford got on the board late in the first half as K.C. Coyne assisted on freshman Dan Shapiro's first collegiate goal at the 40:07 mark. Shortly after Shapiro had checked into the contest, Coyne brought the ball up the left side and crossed to the freshman, who shot and beat Titan goalkeeper Sam Reynolds from 15 yards out.
Early in the second half, Cal State Fullerton's Jose Barragan dragged down Stanford midfielder Galen Thompson inside the box and was whistled for the foul, setting up the penalty kick for the Cardinal. James Twellman made the most of the opportunity, burying the penalty to give Stanford a 2-0 lead.
The Titans battled back, cutting the Cardinal lead to one with a Steve Moreno goal in the 59th minute. The tally snapped Stanford's five-game shutout streak to begin the 2004 season, which ranks as the second longest in program history. Cal State Fullerton had several chances to equalize late in the match, including a Moreno shot that was knocked away by Stanford defenders.
Senior captain Robby Fulton made his first start of the season in goal for the Cardinal, collecting a save and posting his first win of the season. Seyi Abolaji, Michael Brown, Darren Fernandez, and Bronson McDonald were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Cardinal will return to action at the Stanford/Nike Invitational at Maloney Field next weekend. The tournament begins with California meeting Brown at 5:00 pm on Friday. The nightcap features a pair of undefeated squads, as Stanford takes on No. 5 ranked Santa Clara at 7:30 pm.
