Sept. 21, 2004

Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - Stanford (5-5, 0-1 NorPac) suffered a 5-0 defeat at the hands of conference rival Pacific (4-4, 1-1 NorPac) in the NorPac opener for the Cardinal at Brookside Field on Tuesday. Stanford, which had won four of its last five games before Tuesday's loss to the Tigers, trailed just 1-0 at halftime before Pacific put the game away with four second half scores. Lindsay Rovai and Laura Mauer had two goals each for the winners, while Megan Haas and Vianney Campos both contributed a pair of assists.

Rovai got the only goal the Tigers would need when she scored after a deflected penalty corner at 20:39 with Dana Walsh picking up an assist.

The Tigers held onto their slim one-goal lead until Melody Demel made it 2-0 with an assist from Haas on a penalty corner early in the second half at 43:59. Maurer followed just two minutes and 56 seconds later at 46:55 with a goal off an assist from Campos to increase the Tigers' lead to 3-0.

Pacific added two more insurance goals late in the contest when Haas found Maurer for her second goal at 65:49 before Rovai converted on a penalty corner with time expired (70:00) on an assist from Campos to complete the scoring.

Rovai and Maurer both scored on the only two shots they attempted. Campos also took a pair of shots for the Tigers, who finished with a 9-4 advantage over the Cardinal in shots. Aska Sturdevan attempted two of Stanford's four shots.

Pacific attempted seven penalty corners and scored on three of them, while Stanford had five penalty corner opportunities but did not convert on any.

"We were obviously frustrated with today's loss," said Irvine. "The execution just wasn't there, and we were punished on just about every mistake that we did make."

Pacific goalkeeper Kim Myers (4-4) needed just one save to record the shutout.

Stanford goalkeeper Ana Kralovec, who was named the NorPac West Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career on Tuesday, allowed five goals and managed three saves while falling to 5-5 on the season.

Stanford will continue NorPac action by hosting three-time defending NorPac Tournament champion and No. 15 California (9-2, 2-1 NorPac) this Saturday, September 25 (1 pm, PT).

"We're a little over halfway through the regular season at this point and have had an opportunity to really see what needs to be tweaked," said Irvine. "We'll be looking to correct those things before the game against California this Saturday. With our rivalry against them, it's always been a huge contest for us and this year will be no different. They are ranked at No. 15, so obviously for us to be able to win this game would be really big."
