Stanford, Calif. - Sophomore middle blocker Lizzie Suiter tied her career-high with nine blocks as the No. 12 Stanford women's volleyball team swept Arizona State, 3-0, tonight in Burnham Pavilion. Game scores were 30-21, 30-21, 30-12. The Cardinal improve to 9-2 on the year, 2-0 in the Pac-10 while the Sun Devils fall to 5-5, 0-2 in league play.
Ogonna Nnamani moved into third place on The Farm in career kills with 1,843, surpassing All-American Kristin Folkl (1,833).
Game one remained close between the two teams until Stanford opened a two-point lead at 12-10 on a kill by Ogonna Nnamani. A block by Lizzie Suiter and Jennifer Hucke gave the Cardinal the 15-12 lead at the media timeout. Stanford rattled off three more points to open an 18-12 gap, forcing the first Sun Devil timeout. Suiter collected another kill of a slide to give the Cardinal a 24-16 advantage as ASU took their final timeout. Stanford reached game point on a kill by Kristin Richards. A Sun Devil service error gave the Cardinal game one at 30-21.
Stanford took the early 6-1 lead on a block by Suiter and Richards. Suiter would pick up a solo block at 7-1 as the Sun Devils took a timeout. ASU regrouped to close the gap to 6-8 before a tip by Hucke stopped the three-point run at 6-9. The Sun Devils tied it up at 12-all on a service ace but Stanford would take a 15-12 lead on a block by Suiter and Hucke for force a final timeout by Arizona State. An off-speed kill by Kristin Richards put the Cardinal up 20-14. Stanford continued to roll, going up 26-17 on a Richards' service ace. A service ace by Bryn Kehoe gave the Cardinal game point, leading 29-21. Hucke closed out game two with a kill at 30-21.
Game three opened with Stanford leading 6-2 after a kill by Hucke. Arizona State would take their first timeout, trailing 2-8. The Cardinal continued to roll going up 13-5 on a kill by Ogonna Nnamani. The Sun Devils called their second timeout at 6-17 after another Nnamani kill. Stanford led 21-7 after back-to-back ASU hitting errors. A service ace by Kirsten Hornbeak put the Cardinal up 25-10 and reached game and match point at 29-12. A kill by Jennifer Wilson gave Stanford the match at 30-12.
Ogonna Nnamani led the match with 17 kills on the night, followed by Kristin Richards' 14 kills. Jennifer Hucke added 10 kills and four blocks to the Cardinal effort.
ASU was led by Nicole Morton's 10 kills and Sydney Donahue's nine digs.
Stanford is back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 28, in a non-conference match against St. Mary's College in Moraga, Calif.
