Santa Clara, Calif. - Stanford opened play at the Santa Clara adidas Classic with a 3-0 win over Denver tonight at Buck Shaw Stadium. Senior Marcie Ward (Alamo, Calif./Carondelet) scored the game winning goal just 6:32 into the contest on an assist from junior Jenny Farenbaugh (Reseda, Calif./Louisville). The Cardinal have won its last five games, improving to 6-2-0 on the year, while Denver dropped its second-straight game to fall to 2-6-1.

The Cardinal added two goals in the second half as Lizzy George (Alamo, Calif./Carondelet) took advantage of another assist from Farenbaugh in the 60th minute and Shari Summers (Canyon Country, Calif./Valencia) converted a corner kick just two minutes later. Stanford out-shot the Pioneers, 14-1, on the day.

Stanford freshman Erica Holland (Lafayette, Calif./College Park) relieved starting goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) for the final 15 minutes and earned her first collegiate save while helping the Cardinal to its sixth shutout of the season.

On Sunday, Stanford will be back in action at the Santa Clara Classic, as the Cardinal faces Marquette at 11 a.m. at Buck Shaw Stadium.
