Stanford, Calif. - Stanford and Brown battled to a scoreless draw in the third game of the Stanford Nike Invitational at Maloney Field on Sunday afternoon. Stanford moves to 5-1-2 on the season, while Brown's record now stands at 3-2-2. California earned the Stanford Nike Invitational title with a 1-0 win over Santa Clara at Buck Shaw Stadium, handing the Broncos their first defeat of the season on Sunday evening.

The first half was a defensive struggle as the two squads vied for control of the midfield. Brown had the first scoring opportunity, as Jeff Larentowicz boomed a free kick from 20 yards out that just cleared the Stanford crossbar. The Bears out-shot the Cardinal by a 3-2 margin in the first period.

The Stanford offense got on track in the second half, putting a pair of shots on frame and pressuring the Brown goal in the final portion of the half. Freshman Dan Shapiro collected a pass inside the box with under 10 minutes remaining and fired a low shot that was pushed away by Brown goalkeeper Chris Gomez. The Bears had an excellent scoring chance in the first overtime period, as a Keith Caldwell shot towards the upper left corner of the net was plucked out of the air by Cardinal goalkeeper Robby Fulton. The Cardinal had a chance to score in the final overtime period, but a Matt Janusz volley sailed wide of the Brown net.

"We play a lot of great teams like Brown this season," stated head coach Bret Simon. "So, many of these types of games will be decided by one great play or one mistake."

Fulton collected five saves in net for the Cardinal, while Gomez made three for Brown. Larentowicz and Caldwell each attempted a game-high three shots, while Janusz and Darren Fernandez each took two shots for Stanford. Brown out-shot the Cardinal for the match by a 9-6 margin, and six yellow card cautions were issued.

California claimed the Stanford Nike Invitational title after handing Santa Clara a 1-0 defeat at Buck Shaw Stadium on Sunday evening. Yohei Fukuda assisted on a Calen Carr goal in the 51st minute to give the Golden Bears the victory. California played Brown to a scoreless tie on Friday night.
