Sept. 26, 2004

Box Score

Santa Clara, Calif. - No. 20 Stanford (7-2-0) defeated Marquette, 5-0, this afternoon at Buck Shaw Stadium to win the Santa Clara adidas Classic. Senior Marcie Ward (Alamo, Calif./Carondelet) tabbed the game-winning goal 14 minutes into the contest on assists from Gina Farias-Eisner (Calabasas, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) and April Wall (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral). Stanford added four goals in the second half, as the Golden Eagles lost their third-straight match and fell to 4-5 on the year.

Cardinal defender Jenny Farenbaugh (Reseda, Calif./Louisville) was tabbed the tournament's MVP, while forwards Ward and Farias-Eisner and midfielder Martha West (Fort Worth, Texas/Fort Worth Country Day) also earned all-tournament honors.

Stanford's offense was hard to stop in the second half as the Cardinal picked up four goals. Farias-Eisner scored her first goal of the 2004 campaign in the 55th minute to lead things off, and less than five minutes later, freshman Lizzy George (Alamo, Calif./Carondelet) put a header into the net off an Amy Grady (Pawcatuck, Conn./Loomis Chaffee) assist on a corner kick. In the 71st minute, senior Katie Wayland (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) scored her first goal of the year and Grady closed out the scoring barrage with a breakaway goal in the 81st minute.

The Cardinal defense limited its opponent to only one shot in 90 minutes for the second-straight game and shut-out its opponent for the sixth-straight contest as senior Nicole Barnhart (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) and junior Elizabeth Barnard (Indianapolis, Ind./Park Tudor) tended goal. On the other end of the field, the Cardinal fired off 15 shots as Marquette's starting keeper Katie Bissen picked up four saves and back-up goalie Jessica Zetlau added one save.

Stanford, the only team besides the hosting Broncos to win the Santa Clara Classic title in the nine years of the tournament, has now won it twice in the last three years. The Cardinal earned the crown based on goal differential, after Friday night's 3-0 win and today's 5-0 win. The Cardinal also won based on goal differential in 2002.

Stanford will be back at Buck Shaw Stadium on Thursday night as the Cardinal take on Santa Clara at 7 p.m.
