Box Score

Stanford, Calif. - At Maloney Field tonight, the Arizona women's soccer team defeated Stanford for the first time in series history, as the Wildcats posted a 1-0 victory in double overtime. The Cardinal fall to 8-3-2 on the season and 0-1-1 in the Pac-10, while Arizona improves to 12-2-0 and 3-0-0 in conference play. After nearly 108 minutes of scoreless soccer, Arizona's Nikki David scored off a corner kick to win the Wildcats' record-setting game.

"Every Pac-10 game is hard fought," said junior midfielder Leah Tapscott (Madison, Wis./James Madison Memorial) after the loss. Tonight's win marks the first time that Arizona has won three Pac-10 games in a season. Stanford leads the all-time series, 9-1-0.

After the teams combined for only three shots in the first half, Stanford fired off seven shots in the second half -four of which were in the final three and a half minutes of regulation. Senior co-captain Marcie Ward (Alamo, Calif./Carondelet) tallied three of the shots, including two shots on goal, but the Cardinal could not convert and the game went into extra minutes.

Each team had chances in the overtime periods, but with just over two minutes left in the second overtime, Arizona converted a corner kick as Nikki David put the rebound shot in after Stanford keeper Nicole Barnhart (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) punched the ball out of the net.

Stanford will be back on Sunday as the Cardinal host Arizona State at 2:30 p.m. Earlier tonight, the Sun Devils posted a 1-0 victory over Cal in Berkeley. Fox Sports Net will televise the game on a tape delay basis, please check local listings for specific air times.
