Stanford, Calif. - Senior Jason Griffiths scored the equalizer with less than six minutes remaining in regulation, as the Cardinal played UC Davis to a 1-1 draw at Maloney Field on Friday evening. Stanford heads into Sunday's Pac-10 conference match against UCLA with an overall record of 6-1-5, while UC Davis' record now stands at 4-6-2.
The two squads remained deadlocked at zero following an extremely physical first half that saw five yellow card cautions issued. The UC Davis attack pressured the Cardinal goal consistently, and senior goalkeeper Robby Fulton made three saves in the first period. The Aggies had a scoring chance at the midpoint of the half, but Fulton made a diving save of a Ryan Shaw volley to keep the score knotted at 0-0.
The second half looked to be much of the same, as the two squads battled for control and attempted to create chances in the midfield. In the 76th minute, Connor Voss brought the ball up the right flank and crossed to Shaw who was streaking into the Cardinal box. Shaw's header beat the out-stretched hands of Fulton, putting the Aggies ahead 1-0.
Following the goal, Stanford applied additional pressure on the UC Davis defense. In the 85th minute, senior Matt Janusz was fouled outside of the Aggie penalty box. On the ensuing free kick, Griffiths struck a low line drive that snuck through the wall and into the lower left-hand corner of the net, pulling the Cardinal even at one. It was the first goal in a Cardinal uniform for Griffiths, and he becomes the ninth different player on the Stanford squad to score a goal this season.
The Aggies out-shot the Cardinal 2-1 in overtime, and Fulton collected a save in the first overtime period, thwarting the only scoring chance in the extra frame.
Fulton collected four saves in net for Cardinal, while UC Davis goalkeeper Charles Warne registered four saves for the Aggies. Stanford out-shot UC Davis by a 12-9 margin, and Shaw led all players with six shot attempts. Senior Darren Fernandez attempted a team-high three shots for the Cardinal.
Stanford resumes Pac-10 conference play at Maloney Field on Sunday, as the Cardinal host UCLA at 12:00 pm.
