Stanford, Calif. - UCLA scored a pair of second half goals to defeat Stanford 2-0 at Maloney Field on Sunday afternoon. For the Cardinal, it was the first loss since September 24 and the first defeat in Pac-10 conference play so far this season. Stanford falls to 6-2-5 and 1-1-2 in Pac-10 action, while the Bruins improve to 7-2-2 overall and 3-1-0 in conference play.
The two squads entered the half time break deadlocked in a scoreless draw after an exciting first half that saw UCLA out-shoot the Cardinal by a slim 7-6 margin. Both teams created numerous scoring opportunities and UCLA goalkeeper Eric Reed made four saves in the first period.
UCLA's counter attacking style paid off early in the second period, as Benny Feilhaber tallied in the 49th minute to put the Bruins ahead. The score came after UCLA's Richard Flores made a run up the right side and crossed to Kamani Hill in the box. Hill then fed Feilhaber, who finished off the series with his second goal of the season. The Bruins added to their lead in the 71st minute when an errant pass from the Cardinal back line was collected at the top of the Stanford box by Mike Enfield. Enfield found himself one-on-one with Cardinal goalkeeper Robby Fulton and scored with a shot to the lower right corner of the net.
Stanford had an opportunity to cut the lead in half with 16:30 left in regulation, as Dan Shapiro intercepted a Bruin pass in the midfield and passed to a streaking Galen Thompson on the left flank. Thompson struck a low shot that sailed just wide of the right post. The Bruins nearly added to their lead with less than two minutes remaining, but a shot from Flores hit the Stanford post.
Fulton collected four saves in net for Cardinal, while Reed registered five saves for UCLA. The Bruins out-shot Stanford by a 12-9 margin, and UCLA's Chad Barrett led all players with five shot attempts. Darren Fernandez, Matt Janusz, and Bronson McDonald each attempted a team-high two shots for the Cardinal.
"All of the teams in our conference are very good," said Stanford head coach Bret Simon following the match. "One game is not overly important than any other. But, when you have a chance at home against a team like UCLA, you cannot take it lightly. We have to regroup and fortunately, we get another chance against the very same team on Friday."
Stanford won't have to wait long for a rematch with the Bruins, as the Cardinal travel to take on UCLA on Friday at 6:00 pm.
