Box Score

Stanford, Calif. - Stanford won its first Pac-10 game this afternoon as the Cardinal upended Arizona State, 2-1, at Maloney Field. Senior Emilee Shim (Atlanta, Ga./Paideia School) scored the game-winning goal in the 80th minute off an assist from junior Leah Tapscott (Madison, Wis./James Madison Memorial) to help the Cardinal improve to 9-3-2 on the season, with a 1-1-1 mark in conference play. Today's loss drop Arizona State to 6-7-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the Pac-10.

Stanford opened the game with a goal by senior Martha West (Forth Worth, Texas/Fort Worth Country Day) in the 11th minute. West, who drew a foul, fired a free kick into a line of defenders, but took the ball back and dribbled into an opening before lobbing a shot over the keeper.

Arizona State evened it out late in the first half, though, as Brittany Cooper, the Sun Devil's leading scorer, took the ball from Alissa Oldenkamp and found the back of the net.

Both teams continued to generate opportunities, but with 10:13 left in regulation, Tapscott fired the ball into the box and Shim fired it into the cage for the go-ahead goal. The score was the first in her four years at Stanford (as defender, she also has two assists on the year).

Nicole Barnhart (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) returned from her first cap with the U.S. Senior National Team this morning and suited up as the starting keeper for Stanford. She recorded three saves against the Sun Devils, bringing her career total to 172 and moving her up to fourth in the school record books (past Helen Norton, who recorded 170 saves from 1984-85).

Today's game will air on Fox Sports Bay Area on Thursday, Oct. 21 at noon. The match will be re-broadcast on Sunday, Oct. 24 at 2 p.m. and on Wednesday, Oct. 27 at noon. For other Fox Sports affiliates, please check Fox Sports Net for other air times.
