Stanford Suffers Tough 2-1 Overtime Loss At Southwest Missouri State

Springfield, Mo. - Stanford (5-7, 0-3 NorPac) suffered a tough 2-1 overtime loss to Southwest Missouri State (6-3, 2-1 Pac-10) in the first of two back-to-back games versus the Bears at Plaster Field on Friday evening. Cami White was credited with the game-winning goal when she deflected a shot from Gabby Gomez on a penalty corner at 74:19. Gomez was credited with an assist on the goal.

Stanford had an opportunity to win the game at the end of regulation play but Julia Drewes was unable to convert on a penalty stroke when her attempt hit the right and bounced off. The Cardinal had been awarded the penalty stroke after Aska Sturdevan's shot in an attempt to finish off a penalty corner had been stopped by Gomez with her hand.

Drewes had converted on Stanford's first penalty stroke attempt of the season at 22:32 for her first career goal to give the Cardinal an early 1-0 lead. Gomez also committed the infraction that gave Stanford its first penalty stroke, stopping a Cardinal shot with her foot.Adrien Trumpy tied the score for the Bears when she scored unassisted just before halftime at 34:09.

"It was a very disappointing and frustrating outcome," said Stanford head coach Lesley Irvine. "We played well enough to win, and it was an unfortunate and unusual sequence of events that led to the final result. We look forward to playing them again tomorrow."

Southwest Missouri State held a 19-14 shot advantage in the contest, as well as a 12-8 margin in penalty corners. Trumpy took a game-high seven shots for the winners, while four shots by Jessica Zutz were the most by a Stanford player.

Jessie Lininger improved to 6-3, picking up five saves in the winning effort. Ana Kralovec (5-7) took the loss while recording six saves.Sturdevan had a pair of defensive saves for the Cardinal, while Amanda Hanson had one for the Bears.

The victory was the fourth in a row for Southwest Missouri State, while Stanford's season-long losing streak was extended to three.The teams will square off again at Plaster Field on Saturday, October 2 (7:00 pm, CT). The Cardinal will conclude its current three-game trip with a non-conference game versus NorPac East member Saint Louis on Monday, October 4 (1:00 pm, CT).
