Tough Weekend Back East For Coeds And Women

Oct. 20, 2004

Stanford, CA - A rainy, windy weather system pounded the east coast all weekend, making racing conditions tough for both the Stanford Women's and the Coed Sailing Teams. Sailing only 6 races at Yale, the women landed in 10th overall, while the Coeds earned 9th after a full rotation of 20 races at Navy.

The Connecticut shoreline was hit hardest, with wind and waves at Yale Yacht Club topping out at 20 knots and 6 feet, respectively. All the competitors at the annual Yale Women's Regatta remained on shore most of Saturday and Sunday, waiting for a break in the weather so the 18 teams could hit the water. "It's a long way to travel for what ended up as only 6 races in each division, " commented Coach Jay Kehoe.

On Saturday, Liz Rountree and crew Julie Pitts hit the water for Stanford in A-Division. The duo had a great start and pulled a 9, 6 in the extreme conditions. Their second set was fraught with difficulties, resulting in a 12, 17. In B-division, Caroline Young sailed with Jo Madsen for the first set, with results of 14, 11. For the next set, Becca Levin crewed for Young and the duo managed a 4, 8. Racing was abandoned for the remainder of the day, leaving the Stanford team in 10th overall.

On Sunday the conditions were similar- and after some postponements for the strong wind to settle down, A-Division hit the water, resulting in two top finished for Rountree/Pitts. This set brought Stanford up to 8th overall. Unfortunately, the wind built and B-Division was unable to get a set of races off. According to the college rules, the races in A must be dropped from the scores, and the Stanford Cardinal dropped back down to 10th overall.

In Annapolis, the wind was not quite as bad, ranging from 12-20 knots. The 20 teams at the Navy Fall Intersectional were able to get off a full 20 races in two days. The highlight for the Cardinal sailors was sophomore Emery Wager earning 3rd in C-Division (sailing singlehanded Lasers). Wager was bested by Georgetown's Andrew Campbell and Harvard's Clay Johnson. "This is a good practice run for Emery, " said Coach Brent Harrill, who will accompany Wager to the ICSA Singlehanded Nationals this weekend in Minnesota.

Sailing in A-Division, Peter Deming and Lucy Horton earned 15th. Freshman Eddie Conrad made a strong debut in his first big Intersectional, earning 11th in B-Division. Conrad sailed with veteran crews Anna Vu and Ali Salatti (in the windier races). Also making his debut in a major Intersectional was senior Andy Mesher, who earned 10th overall in D-Division, sailing a singlehanded Laser.
