Los Angeles, Calif. - A Matt Janusz goal gave Stanford an early lead, but UCLA scored twice in the second half to hand the Cardinal its first road loss of the season at Drake Stadium in Los Angeles on Friday evening. With the defeat, Stanford falls to 6-3-5 and 1-2-2 in conference play, while the Bruins improve to 8-2-2 and 4-1-0 in Pac-10 action.
Janusz put the Cardinal ahead in the 31st minute after UCLA was whistled for a foul just outside of its own box. Janusz scored on the ensuing free kick from 24-yards out, giving the senior his second goal of the season and his 21st career tally. The goal snapped a seven-game Cardinal scoreless streak against UCLA that dated back to the 2001 season.
The Bruins fought back in the second half, as Chad Barrett found Jonathan Bornstein with a pass inside the Cardinal box in the 57th minute, and Bornstein pulled UCLA even with a score from close range. The Bruins took the lead in the waning moments of regulation as Barrett was on the receiving end of a Kamani Hill pass and struck a shot from close range that trickled into the Cardinal net after being tipped by Stanford goalkeeper Robby Fulton.
Fulton was excellent in net for Stanford, collecting four saves from 13 Bruin shot attempts. The Cardinal attack recorded just one shot on goal, with the lone attempt coming on Janusz' goal. It was an extremely physical contest, as the two squads combined for 48 fouls throughout the match. UCLA's Hill led all players with five shots on the evening.
Stanford returns to The Farm for a pair of crucial Pac-10 matches at Maloney Field next weekend. The Cardinal will take on Washington at 7:30 pm on Friday evening, before hosting Oregon State on Sunday at 2:30 pm. Both matches will be the second games of doubleheaders with the Stanford women's soccer team.
