Pullman, Wash. - Senior outside hitter Ogonna Nnamani recorded a match-high 14 kills as the No. 11 Stanford women's volleyball team swept Washington State, 3-0, tonight. Game scores were 30-17, 30-19, 30-19. The Cardinal improve to 15-4 overall, 7-1 in the Pac-10 while the Cougars fall to 3-18, 0-8 in league play.
WSU was up 9-7 early in game one but the Cardinal would tie up the game at nine-all on a Cougar attack that went long. With the game tied at 10-10, Stanford went on a 5-1 run to lead 15-11 at the media timeout. A block solo by Lizzie Suiter gave the Cardinal a 19-12 advantage as the Cougars took their first timeout. Stanford raced to a 10-point lead at 24-14 after a block by Kristin Richards and Franci Girard force the final WSU timeout. The Cardinal continued to roll, reaching game point on a service ace by Richards at 29-16. A net violation gave Stanford the 30-17 win. Ogonna Nnamani tallied six kills in game one while Richards added four. The Cardinal outdug WSU, 20-12.
Stanford jumped out to a 6-2 lead early in game two after a Cougar hitting error. WSU closed the gap to 8-9 on a blocking error by the Cardinal and tied the game at 10-all. But Stanford regrouped to take a 15-11 lead into the media timeout after a block by Lizzie Suiter and Jennifer Hucke. The Cardinal scored the next four points to extend their advantage to 19-11 after a kill by Hucke force the first Cougar timeout. Stanford took a 10-point lead at 23-13 after a kill by Kristin Richards, capped a four-point Cardinal run. Stanford ran off three more points to go up 26-13 and reached game point at 29-15 after a Richards' kill. WSU held off four game points before finally falling 19-30 on a service error.
With Washington State leading 6-5 in game three, Stanford went on a five-point run to go up 10-6 on a service ace by Katie Goldhahn as the Cougars called their first timeout. Three more consecutive Cardinal points capped an eight-point run as Stanford went up 13-6 on a kill by Kristin Richards. SU held a 19-9 advantage on a block by Lizzie Suiter and Ogonna Nnamani. Stanford led 26-15 after a WSU service error. A Cougar attack that was hit long gave the Cardinal game and match point at 29-17. Washington State held off two match points be a kill by Njideka Nnamani closed out the game, 30-19.
Kristin Richards added 11 kills while Lizzie Suiter added seven kills and five blocks. Courtney Schultz led the match with 15 digs, followed by Bryn Kehoe's 12 digs.
The Cardinal are back in action tomorrow against No. 1 Washington in Seattle, Wash. at 7 p.m.
