Seattle, Wash. - Senior outside hitter Ogonna Nnamani's 14 kills was not enough as the No. 1-ranked Washington volleyball team defeated Stanford, 3-0, tonight at the Bank of America Arena. Game scores were 16-30, 29-31, 22-30. The Cardinal fall to 15-5 on the year, 7-2 in the Pac-10 while the Huskies improve to 17-0, 9-0 in league play.
Washington took the early 6-3 lead in game one and led 10-5 after a Cardinal attack went long. Stanford called their first timeout, trailing 6-12 after a Huskies service ace. UW continued to roll and were up 20-10 as the Cardinal called their final timeout. Washington reached game point at 29-15 and closed out the game, 30-16 to take the 1-0 lead in the match.
Game two remained close early with the teams knotted at seven-all. The Cardinal would string together three consecutive points to take a 10-7 lead on a kill by Jennifer Hucke as the Huskies took their first timeout. Stanford held a slim 19-16 lead after another Hucke kill but Washington would cut the lead to one at 19-20 as the Cardinal called their first timeout. Stanford came out of the break to score the next three points and force the final Huskies timeout after a block solo by Franci Girard. Washington would score the next two points to close within two as the Cardinal took their final timeout. The two teams tied at 25-all, then the Huskies took the lead on a service ace at 26-25, recording their fourth straight point. Washington reached game point at 29-28 and again at 30-29, winning 31-29 to go up two games to none.
The Huskies jumped out to a 9-3 lead early in game three, forcing a Cardinal timeout. Washington built on their lead going up 13-3 capping an eight-point run. UW continued to roll and led 20-14 as they neared the homestretch. The Huskies led 25-18 and reached match point at 29-22. UW won game three, 30-22.
Stanford's Jennifer Hucke added 13 kills and four blocks on the night while Katie Goldhahn and Courtney Schultz had 10 digs each.
The Cardinal are back in action next week on Sunday, October 31, as they travel across the bay to Berkeley and take on California at 3 p.m. to open the second half of league play.
