Stanford, Calif. - Stanford upended Oregon tonight at Maloney Field, 2-0. The Cardinal out-shot the Ducks 18-5, but it took until the 81st minute before sophomore Shari Summers (Canyon Country, Calif./Valencia) scored the game-winner. Senior co-captain Marcie Ward (Alamo, Calif./Carondelet) added the insurance goal two minutes later, as Stanford improved to 11-4-2 on the season with a 3-2-1 mark in the Pac-10. Oregon falls to 3-11-2 overall, with an 0-5-1 record in conference play.
After firing off a barrage of shots over the course of the first 80 minutes, Ward sent the ball up field and found senior Natalie Sanderson (Ventura, Calif./Buena) in the left corner. Sanderson sent the ball across the box, where Summers put it back to the left and into the net. The Cardinal did not let up, despite the 1-0 advantage, and this time, junior Leah Tapscott (Madison, Wis./James Madison Memorial) sent the ball ahead and found Ward breaking up the center of the field. Ward took the ball to the left and drew three defenders and the keeper towards her before sending the ball into the cage.
The blanking is senior co-captain Nicole Barnhart's (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) seventh of the season and 36 shutout of her career, the second-most in school history. The keeper also picked up five saves on the night, putting her only three away from tying for the third spot in career saves.
Stanford will host Oregon State on Sunday at noon. The Cardinal will honor its seven seniors before the game, as they play their final regular season match at Maloney Field.
Notes: On Saturday, Stanford senior Martha West (Fort Worth, Texas/Fort Worth Country Day) will be a featured guest on Inside Soccer, and international radio broadcast. West will join hosts Brian Halliday and Brian Quinn at 4 p.m. (PT). The broadcast can be found online at World Talk Radio.
