Stanford, Calif. - Jeff Hoover scored a goal with less than two minutes remaining in regulation to lead Washington a 1-0 victory over Stanford at Maloney Field on Friday evening. With the defeat, the Cardinal falls to 6-4-5 and 1-3-2 in conference play, while the Huskies improve to 11-3-2 and 4-0-1 in Pac-10 action.
The teams entered the half time break deadlocked at 0-0, following a physical first period that saw each side combine for just five shots. Washington had an excellent scoring opportunity at the 37:48 mark as Mike Chabala dribbled into the top left corner of the Cardinal box and struck a shot that beat Stanford goalkeeper Andrew Kartunen but hit the far post. The Cardinal nearly scored later in the half, as junior Cooper McKee collected a pass in the Husky box and fired a shot through two defenders that was saved by Washington goalkeeper Chris Eylander.
The Cardinal controlled the ball in the midfield throughout much of the second period, but several attempts on goal were thwarted by the Husky defense. Senior Jason Griffiths launched a shot from 25-yards out that was knocked away by Eylander, and senior Darren Fernandez had an excellent chance sail wide late in the half.
The Washington attack came on strong at the close of regulation, with Hoover registering three shot attempts in the final four minutes of play. With just under two minutes remaining, the Huskies broke up a Stanford attack in the midfield and sophomore Will Flanagan brought the ball up the right side. Flanagan passed to a streaking Hoover in the Cardinal box, and the junior found the back of the net with a volley to put Washington ahead.
The goal put a damper on what had been a stellar performance by Kartunen in goal for the Cardinal. The sophomore made several acrobatic plays throughout the game, collecting three saves including a leaping stop of a Flanagan shot in the first half.
Stanford continues its final regular season home stand on Sunday, as Oregon State comes to Maloney Field for a match scheduled for 2:30 pm. The Cardinal defeated the Beavers, 2-1, in Corvallis earlier this month. The game will follow the Stanford's women's match against Oregon State scheduled for 12:00 pm.
