Stanford, Calif. - Stanford (8-2-1) closed out the non-conference portion of its schedule this afternoon at Maloney Field with a 2-1 victory over Saint Mary's (8-4-0). With the match tied at 1-1 and less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation, junior Leah Tapscott (Madison, Wis./James Madison Memorial) took the pass from senior Emilee Shim (Atlanta, Ga./Paideia) and fired the ball over the keeper for the game-winning goal in the 84th minute.
Stanford sophomore Gina Farias-Eisner (Calabasas, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) helped give Stanford the edge early today, as she drove up the field and beat her defender one-on-one to set up freshman Lizzy George (Alamo, Calif./Carondelet), who headed the ball into the net just six and a half minutes into the match.
Saint Mary's tied it up before the half, as leading scorer Genevieve Hollis converted a pass from Jenny Barbera in the 39th minute to tie the match at 1-1.
Seniors Marcie Ward (Alamo, Calif./Carondelet) and Martha West (Fort Worth, Texas, Forth Worth Country Day) kept the offensive pressure high, as the duo combined for six shots on goal.
The Cardinal will open Pac-10 play next Sunday at California. Kick-off in Berkeley is set for 1 p.m.
