Stanford, Calif. - Senior Matt Janusz scored two goals and goalkeeper Robby Fulton posted his second shutout of the season to lead the Cardinal to a 2-0 win over Oregon State at Maloney Field on Sunday afternoon. Stanford snapped a three-game losing streak and improves to 7-4-5 and 2-3-2 in conference play, while the Beavers fall to 5-10-1 and 0-6-0 in Pac-10 action.
Following a pre-game ceremony to honor all eight Cardinal seniors, the two squads jumped into an exciting first period that saw the teams combine for five shots in the first eight minutes. Stanford finally broke through in the 28th minute, as Janusz got behind the Beaver defense and collected a goal kick from Fulton in the Oregon State box. Janusz headed the ball towards the net and it bounced in after being tipped by Beaver goalkeeper Jason Mariner. Fulton was credited with his first career assist on the goal.
Oregon State stepped up its attack in the second half and had an opportunity to equalize with 36:34 remaining in regulation. Brett Gardner crossed the ball in front of the Cardinal net, and Chad Bartolome struck a low shot that was knocked wide by a diving Fulton.
With less that 17 minutes left in regulation, sophomore Galen Thompson brought the ball up the right side and passed to freshman Dan Shapiro, who was streaking into the Oregon State box. A Beaver defender handled the ball at the top of the box and the Cardinal was awarded a penalty kick. Janusz calmly converted, striking a low line drive that beat Oregon State goalkeeper Matthew Fitchett to the right.
Stanford had an opportunity to add to its lead in the 85th minute, but Fitchett saved a point-blank shot from senior Darren Fernandez. Fernandez had an additional chance off of the rebound, but his attempt sailed high.
"I think all of our seniors had good games and that was the difference," said head coach Bret Simon. "Each one of them had important moments where they had to make plays and they made them for us today."
Fulton collected three saves in net for the Cardinal, while Mariner made a pair of saves and Fitchett recorded one for the Beavers. Janusz, Fernandez, and sophomore Michael Brown each attempted a game-high three shots.
Stanford heads to UC Santa Barbara next Saturday to face the Gauchos in the final non-conference game of the season for the Cardinal, before returning to the Bay Area to face Cal on November 13 in the regular season finale.
