St. Louis, Mo. - Stanford (6-8) snapped its four-game losing streak in dramatic fashion when Liz Robinson scored a breakaway goal on assist from Jessica Zutz at 89:54 in the second overtime of a 3-2 non-conference victory over Saint Louis at the A-B Center on Monday. Zutz had two goals earlier in the contest for her first career two-goal game and finished the contest with a career-high five points.
"This was a huge win for us," said Stanford head coach Lesley Irvine. "It's nice to win a close game like this."
Six of Stanford's eight losses this season, including each of its last three during the recent skid, had come by a single goal. Stanford had also lost both of its two previous overtime games this year, both coming during the streak. Stanford's six victories in 2004 equals the team's total from last season.
Saint Louis jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 2:11 into the contest when Catherine Donovan scored on an assist from Marissa Lynn.
The Cardinal came back to tie the score at 1-1 on Zutz' first goal coming on a penalty corner just before at halftime at 31:05 and then went ahead 2-1 when Zutz scored again just after the break at 39:50. Aska Sturdevan assisted on both scores.
Zutz now leads the Cardinal with 12 points on the season, while Sturdevan is second with 10.
St. Louis sent the game into overtime when Lynn scored her first goal of the season at 60:45 to finish off a penalty corner with Michelle Sinclair and Jamie Smeland picking up assists.
Neither team would take another shot in regulation but both clubs had opportunities to win the contest in the first overtime by firing off two shots each. Stanford attempted four penalty corners in the first extra period, while Saint Louis tried two.
Robinson's goal was the only shot of the second overtime session and neither team had a penalty corner.
Stanford finished the game with nearly twice as many shot attempts as the Billikens with an 11-6 advantage. The Cardinal also held a 9-6 lead in penalty corners.
Ana Kralovec (6-8) picked up the victory in goal for the Cardinal, making one save. Julie Moeckel (2-5) suffered the loss for Saint Louis and made three saves.
Neither team recorded a defensive save.
Stanford has now won 15 consecutive games over Saint Louis, never losing to the Billikens in recorded history.
Stanford returns to the Bay Area for its next contest when the Cardinal plays Boston College in a neutral site game in Berkeley on Sunday, October 10 (2:00 pm, PT). Stanford will then be out of action for 13 days before hosting Pacific (Saturday, October 23, 1:00 pm, PT) and traveling to California (Saturday, October 30, 4:00 pm, PT) for its final two regular season contests.
