Pacific Palisades, Calif. - Stanford women's tennis kicked off the 2004-05 season this week at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, as senior Erin Burdette (Jackson, Ga./Monroe Academy) and sophomore Theresa Logar (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) both won their opening matches to advance to the second round of competition.

Burdette claimed a three-set victory over UCLA's Riza Zalameda, 7-6(7), 5-7, 7-6(4). She will face top-seeded Cristelle Grier of Northwestern in the second round tomorrow. Logar defeated Duke's Jackie Carleton, 6-4, 6-4, and will face Story Tweedie-Yates of TCU on Friday.

Junior Alice Barnes (Cambridge, U.K.), seeded No. 5 in the tournament, was upset by Mississippi's Chloe Carlotti in two sets, 6-4, 6-2.

In the qualifier earlier this week, sophomore Anne Yelsey (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar) won her first match in two sets over Eastern Michigan's Victoria Domina (6-4, 6-3) but dropped a three-set match to Harvard's Courtney Bergman, 7-6(4), 6-7(6), 6-2.

In doubles action, both Stanford teams were eliminated in the qualifier, with the top-seeded duo of Barnes and Burdette falling in the final round to Florida's Whitney Benik and Lolita Frangulyan, 8-2. They defeated UCLA's Laura Gordon and Elizabeth Lumpkin in the opening round, 8-5, before dropping Georgia Tech's Kelly Anderson and Lyndsay Shosho, 8-2. Stanford's second duo of Yelsey and freshman Whitney Deason (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid School) fell in the first round to Georgia Tech pair Kristi Miller and Alison Silverio, 8-6.
