Hernandez And Grunfeld Combine For 45 Points In 88-64 Victory

Santa Clara, Ca - Chris Hernandez and Dan Grunfeld combined for 45 points, 14 assists and eight rebounds to power the Stanford men's basketball team to an 88-64 victory over Concordia University of Irvine in an exhibition game on Saturday at Santa Clara's Leavey Center.

Hernandez, an All Pac-10 selection last year, scored a game-high 23 points in 31 minutes of play. Hernandez hit 5-of-9 shots from the floor, including three 3-pointers in five attempts. Hernandez was perfect from the free throw line (10-for-10) and added seven assists, two steals and a blocked shot. Grunfeld, a junior, added 22 points (10-for-13 from the floor), seven assists, six rebounds and a steal in 29 minutes of play.

Nick Robinson added 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds along with two assists, two steals and a block in 30 minutes. Senior center Rob Little added ten points (5-for-7 from the floor) along with two blocks.

Concordia, which won the NAIA title during the 2001-02 season, led 7-6 with 16:42 in the first half, before the Cardinal scored ten straight points to take a 16-7 lead with 12:26 before halftime.

With the score 34-26 with 3:21 in the first half, Stanford outscored the Eagles, 12-2, to take a 46-28 halftime lead.

At halftime, Stanford had shot 61 percent from the floor, hitting 20-of-33 from the field. Hernandez and Grunfeld each scored 12 points.

Stanford started the second half with a 14-6 run to take a 60-34 lead with 15:12 remaining in the game. The 26-point lead was Stanford's biggest of the game.

The Cardinal shot .596 (34-for-57 from the floor) compared to .400 (22-for-55) for Concordia. Stanford outrebounded the Eagles, 39-28.

Stanford begins the regular season on Nov. 19 (8:36 p.m. tipoff) against USF at the Pete Newell Challenge at The Arena in Oakland.
