Stanford, Calif. - Sophomore outside hitter Kristin Richards recorded 19 kills and 13 digs as the ninth-ranked Stanford women's volleyball team won its sixth consecutive match with a 3-0 sweep of Washington State tonight in Burnham Pavilion. Game scores were 30-19, 30-22, 30-22. The Cardinal improve to 21-6 overall, 13-3 in the Pac-10 while the Cougars fell to 4-25, 1-15 in league play.
With her 20 kills tonight, Ogonna Nnamani has 2,234 career kills and needs only 22 to become the Pac-10 all-time leader in this category.
Stanford led 6-3 early in game one after a kill by Jennifer Hucke but the Cougars closed to within one at 7-8 after a Cardinal hitting error. Stanford led 15-10 at the media timeout as Ogonna Nnamani recorded her fourth kill of the game. The Cardinal held a 20-16 advantage after a WSU blocking error and reached 23-18 on a Cougar attack that went into the antenna. A block by Franci Girard and Bryn Kehoe forced the final WSU timeout at 28-19. The Cardinal reached game point on a lifted ball violation at 29-19 and closed it out on a block solo by Kristin Richards, 30-19.
Stanford took the early lead in game two as a Richards' kill put the Cardinal up 7-3. A block solo by Ogonna Nnamani put SU up 10-7. Stanford led 15-12 at the media timeout on a kill by Jennifer Hucke. A Cougar attack went long to put Stanford up 20-15. WSU called their first timeout trailing 16-24 after a Cougar hitting error. An Ogonna Nnamani kill put the Cardinal up 27-19. Stanford reached game point on another Nnamani kill at 29-22. A block solo by Njideka Nnamani gave the Cardinal a 30-22 victory to take a two games to none lead in the match.
Washington State took a quick 5-1 lead to open game three. Stanford called their first timeout trailing 3-8 after a Cougar service ace. The Cardinal closed the gap to 10-11 on a kill by Ogonna Nnamani and tied it up at 12-all on a double-hit call on WSU. A solo block by Lizzie Suiter gave the Cardinal their first lead of the game at 16-15. Stanford opened up their lead to 22-17 on a kill by Franci Girard. The Cougars would call a timeout out trailing 17-23 after a kill by Kristin Richards. Stanford continued to roll reaching game point at 29-21 on an Ogonna Nnamani kill. Njideka Nnamani closed out the match with a kill at 30-22.
Ogonna Nnamani led the match with 20 kills on the night. Bryn Kehoe added 44 assists, three service aces and 11 digs to the effort while Lizzie Suiter notched four blocks to lead the team.
The Cardinal closes out its home schedule against No. 23 Santa Clara on Tuesday, November 23 at 7 p.m. in Burnham Pavilion. Stanford ends the regular season on the road, facing Arizona State and No. 22 Arizona next weekend.
