Stanford Falls to Tennessee 69-57

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) - Scooter McFagdon scored 21 points and keyed bigscoring runs in each half to lead Tennessee to a 69-57 victory over Stanford onMonday night in the opening round of the Maui Invitational.

The Volunteers (1-0) will play No. 11 North Carolina in Tuesday'ssemifinals. The Tar Heels (1-1) beat Brigham Young 86-50 on Monday.

McFagdon had seven points in the 11-0 run that gave the Volunteers a 17-6lead midway through the first half.

Tennessee led 32-20 at halftime and it looked as if the Volunteers werepulling away for a laugher when they went on a 12-2 run that made it 51-31 with11:50 to play. McFagdon had the last six points of that spurt.

But Stanford (1-1) held the Volunteers to just two field goals over thefinal 10 minutes and used a 14-0 burst to get to 53-47 with 5:39 left on adrive by Dan Grunfeld.

The Cardinal couldn't get any closer.

Major Wingate and C.J. Watson hit Tennessee's only two field goals of thelast 10 minutes to make it 57-47. The Cardinal got within six one last time,but the Volunteers went 12-for-14 from the free-throw line over the final 2:38- 5-for-6 by McFagdon in the final 44 seconds - to end any hopes of a Stanfordcomeback.

Watson had 16 points and Brandon Crump added 10 for Tennessee, which shot 48percent from the field (24-for-50).

Grunfeld finished with 19 points for the Cardinal, while Matt Haryasz andChris Hernandez each had 10.
