Stanford, Calif. - Ogonna Nnamani recorded a match-best 15 kills to lead the seventh-ranked Stanford women's volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep of No. 25 Santa Clara tonight in Burnham Pavilion. Game scores were 30-14, 30-19, 30-23. The Cardinal improve to 22-6 on the season while the Broncos fall to 18-8.
Stanford held a 7-4 lead early in game one after an Ogonna Nnamani kill. Santa Clara called their first timeout trailing 4-9 after back-to-back Bronco errors. The Cardinal led 13-5 on a Jennifer Hucke kill and went up 16-6 on a Hucke service ace. Santa Clara took their final timeout at 7-19 after a lifted ball violation. Stanford continued to roll and led 27-11 on Nnamani's sixth kill of the game. A kill by Kristin Richards gave the Cardinal game point at 29-14 while a hitting error ended the game at 30-14.
Game two remained close early until Santa Clara opened up a 9-6 lead to force a Cardinal timeout. Stanford tied it up at 10-all on a quick set to Franci Girard. Stanford built a 17-13 as the Broncos took their first timeout after a kill by Kristin Richards. Santa Clara called their final timeout trailing 17-24 as Lizzie Suiter recorded her second kill of the game. Stanford continued to roll going up 28-18 on a kill by Jennifer Hucke. The Cardinal reached game point on a block by Hucke and Suiter at 29-18. Ogonna Nnamani tallied her 10th kill of the match as Stanford won 30-19.
The Cardinal opened a 6-1 lead to start game three as the Broncos took their first timeout. Santa Clara closed the gap to three at 7-10 but could get no closer as Stanford pulled ahead 14-8 on a kill by Franci Girard. The Broncos trailed 19-26 when they called their final timeout as a Santa Clara attack went long. A Bronco service error gave the Cardinal match point at 29-22. Stanford won 30-23 on a kill by Jennifer Wilson.
Kristin Richards and Jennifer Hucke added eight kills each with Hucke notching three service aces as well.
Jac Heler led the Broncos with eight kills while Caroline Walters led the match with 12 digs.
The Cardinal travel to Tempe, Arizona to face Arizona State on Friday, November 26 at 7 p.m. then head to Tucson to take on #21 Arizona at 7 p.m. to end the regular season.
