No. 7 Stanford Holds Off No. 12 Texas Tech

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) - Candice Wiggins scored the go-ahead basket with 1:34 left, then grabbed a rebound on the other end in No. 7 Stanford's 61-58 victory over 12th-ranked Texas Tech on Sunday.

In the final seconds, T'Nae Thiel got a steal and made two free throws to lift Stanford (5-0).

Brooke Smith scored 10 of her 22 points in the final 9:33, Kelley Suminski had 13 points and Wiggins added 11. Thiel finished with eight points and eight rebounds.

Erin Grant led the Lady Raiders (1-1) with 18 points, making all seven of her free throws and scoring all but four of her points after halftime. Chesley Dabbs added 12 points and six boards.

Grant missed a jumper with 1:09 remaining, but Texas Tech got the ball back with 35.4 seconds left following a 30-second clock violation by Stanford. The Lady Raiders couldn't get a shot off, but got another possession with 12.8 seconds left after a scramble for a loose ball.

But Alesha Robertson missed a 3-pointer in the waning seconds.

Texas Tech started its comeback on Grant's two free throws with 15:17 to pull within 32-30. Grant's 3-pointer at 12:02 gave the Lady Raiders their first lead, 37-35.

Stanford jumped out to a 12-0 lead and led by as many as 17 in the first half before the Lady Raiders made their move after halftime with a 27-6 run.

The Cardinal shot 46.7 percent and held a 25-14 rebounding edge in the first half while holdingTexas Tech to 26.1 percent.

Stanford played without point guard Susan King Borchardt, sidelined with a stress reaction in her left foot. Coach Tara VanDerveer is hopeful to have Borchardt back in the lineup to face Pepperdine on Dec. 10.
