Home Sweet Home For Men's Hoops, Cardinal Wins 17th Straight At Home

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) - Dan Grunfeld scored 15 points to help Stanford winits 17th straight home game, 71-54 over Dartmouth on Wednesday night.

Chris Hernandez added 14 points for the Cardinal (5-4), who won their thirdstraight.

No one scored more than nine points for Dartmouth (3-6), which lost itsthird straight.

Stanford has won 26 of its last 27 home contests, while the Big Greenremained winless in four road games.

The teams have met just six times, and the first since the 1971-72 season,with Stanford winning five of them, including in the 1942 NCAA championshipgame - the Cardinal's lone men's basketball national title.

The Big Green made their first trip to the West Coast in five years, andplayed their first game against a Pac-10 team in 12 years. Dartmouth fell to3-15 against the Pac-10. The Big Green made their first trip to the West Coastfor a game against Stanford in 1938.

Stanford improved to 24-8 against the Ivy League. The Cardinal haven't lostto an Ivy League school since the 1981-82 season.

Hernandez hit two quick 3-pointers to open the second half and Stanfordeventually opened a 16-point edge in the first five minutes.

Dartmouth's leading scorer Mike Lang was forced to leave the game midwaythrough the second half after getting hit in the head with the basketball as hescrambled for a loose ball. He returned late in the game.

The teams combined for 47 turnovers.

Grunfeld scored eight of his 10 first-half points during a 10-0 run asStanford opened a 25-14 lead with 6:04 remaining.

Stanford never trailed in the game, though the Big Green kept it closethrough the first half.

Reserve Peter Prowitt, a 6-foot-10 freshman forward, blocked three shots asthe Cardinal took a 33-24 advantage into halftime.
