Gentry Crowned Champion, Team Finished Eighth in Reno

Dec. 22, 2004

Reno, Nev. - Stanford captured eighth place at this year's Reno Tournament of Champions, held Sunday at the Livestock Event Center in Reno, NV. Stanford placed three wrestlers in the top six in their respective weight classes, and limped home longing for some rest after finals week and a long day in Reno. The tournament served as a Pac-10 sneak preview as nine of the conference's ten teams were in attendance.

For the second tournament in a row, Gentry kept his win streak alive (now at an incredible 54 straight victories) in dramatic fashion. Gentry met Brian Stith of Arizona State in the finals. Stith wrestled Gentry to a 1-1 tie in regulation, only to be ridden in his half of the 30 second tiebreaker period. Gentry was able to escape in his half of the tiebreaker period, holding off Stith for a 2-1 victory.

Also placing for Stanford on the day were Scott Loescher (165 pounds), 5th, and Nathan Peterson (125 pounds), 6th. Loescher recorded five wins on the day to capture his medal, while Peterson went 3-3. Other notes on the day: Junior Imad Kharbush (174) cruised in his first two matches on the day before being forced to default out of the tournament due to a broken nose. Kharbush should be back in action soon. Junior Luis Vendrell (141) was also very impressive until a knee injury (extent of which is currently unknown) knocked him out of competition as well. This tournament also marked the return of junior Ryan Hagen to the Stanford lineup at 184 pounds. Hagen looked impressive in his return, going 2-2 on the day with two falls.

Stanford will take eight competitors to the prestigious Midlands Invitational next week in Evanston, IL, and then returns to dual meet action on January 8 in Grand Prairie, TX in the annual Lone Star Duals.
