Tallahassee, Fla. - Senior outside hitter Ogonna Nnamani recorded a match-high 18 kills as the sixth-ranked Stanford women's volleyball team swept Jacksonville 3-0 in their first round match of the NCAA Volleyball Tournament. Game scores were 30-15, 30-20, 30-15. The Cardinal improve to 25-6 overall while the Dolphins end their season with a record of 15-14.
With game one tied at four-all, Stanford went on a four-point run to take an 8-4 lead on a kill by Kristin Richards. The Cardinal increased their advantage to 12-5 on another Richards' kill, forcing a Dolphin timeout. Ogonna Nnamani recorded her fourth kill of the game as Stanford led 17-9. A Nnamani service ace put SU up 22-11 as Jacksonville called their final timeout. The Cardinal continued to roll, reaching game point at 29-15 on another Nnamani kill. Nnamani closed out the game with her seventh kill of the game at 30-15.
Stanford led 7-6 early in game two then went on a six-point run to stake at 13-6 lead on a kill by Franci Girard. Jacksonville took their first timeout trailing 7-15 after another Cardinal kill. Stanford led 20-9 on a Dolphin hitting error and were up 26-16 after a kill by Kristin Richards. The Cardinal reached game point on a block by Lizzie Suiter and Ogonna Nnamani at 29-19 and won game two 30-20 on a kill by Suiter.
Stanford took the early 7-3 lead on a kill by Nnamani in game three. The Cardinal continued to hold the advantage, going up 18-9 on a kill by Franci Girard and led 23-12 after a kill by Lizzie Suiter. Stanford reached game and match point on a service ace by Kristin Richards at 29-15. A block by Michelle Mellard and Ogonna Nnamani gave the Cardinal the win at 30-15.
Kristin Richards notched a double-double with 15 kills and 13 digs on the night. Lizzie Suiter added seven kills a four blocks to the Stanford effort. Bryn Kehoe chipped in 42 assists and 10 digs as well.
The Cardinal will be back in action tomorrow night at 7 p.m. ET against the winner of the Florida-Florida A&M match held later this evening.
