SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The No. 3 Stanford women's water polo team shut out UC San Diego 6-0 in its early game on Saturday, and defeated rival California 9-7 in the afternoon game at the Gaucho Invitational in Santa Barbara. The wins improve Stanford's record to 7-1 overall.
In the win over UC San Diego, the Stanford defense held firm as the Cardinal shut out the Tritons for four quarters. Stanford got on the board in the first quarter, scoring two goals and pushing its lead to 3-0 with a second quarter score. The Cardinal duplicated their performance in the second half, netting two scores in the third quarter and sealing the win with a goal in the final period. Junior Hannah Luber was the star for the Cardinal, scoring three times. Sophomore driver Laurel Champion, senior Wendy Watkins, and senior Lauren Faust each added a goal for the Cardinal. The victory marked the squad's first shutout of the 2004 season.
The win over UC San Diego pushed Stanford into the winners bracket, where they met rival Cal in an afternoon contest. The Cardinal netted two scores in the first quarter, and ended the period with a 2-1 lead. Stanford added three goals in the second quarter, and finished the first half with a 5-3 lead. In the third quarter, the Cardinal outscored the Bears 3-2, and held off their opponents in the fourth period, capping a 9-7 victory. Luber and freshman Christina Hewko scored two goals apiece to lead Stanford. Champion, Faust, Watkins, sophomore Nancy El-Sakkary, and freshman Katie Hansen each pitched in a goal.
The Cardinal continue at the Gaucho Invitational tomorrow at the Campus Pool on the UC Santa Barbara Campus.
