Stanford Hosts 2004 Women's Water Polo Invitational

STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford women's water polo team opened the 2004 Stanford Invitational with an 11-3 win over Michigan in the second game of the tournament, then fell to USC 10-8 in game number six at the Avery Aquatic Center on Saturday.

Stanford scored three times in the final two minutes of play of the initial period to shutout Michigan 4-0 heading into the second period. Cardinal sophomore Laurel Champion led Stanford with three scores, followed by seniors Lauren Faust and Wendy Watkins with two goals each.

Stanford's Watkins, Hannah Luber and Faust each scored two goals against USC, but could not overcome the Women of Troy in the end. Cardinal goalkeeper Meredith McColl recorded four saves in the game, while Kelly Graff of USC notched 10 goalie saves.

Competition at the Stanford Invitational will continue on Sunday at 9 a.m. PT at the Avery Aquatic Center.
