The Stanford Women's Crew had a solid performance in their season opener against the squad from the University of British Columbia. The first varsity eight dominated from start to finish winning their event by seven seconds in a time of 6.50. All-American coxswain, Wendy Hoeveler, steered a near perfect course to lead the Cardinal.
The Stanford second varsity got off to a slow start in their event by losing 2/3 of a boat length to UBC off the start and then fought to comeback just before the halfway point in the race. The UBC boat managed to hold off the Cardinal winning the event in a time of 6.55 to the Cardinal's 6.59.
The Stanford novice came out ahead off of the start and then lost ground to UBC in the middle 1000 meters of the race. The Stanford boat closed the gap in the last 500 meters but came up seconds short finishing in a time of 7.23 to UBC's 7.21.
The Cardinal squad has this week's spring break practices to prepare for next weekend's Windermere Classic where they face Virginia, Michigan State and Cornell University.
