March 21, 2004

HONOLULU, Hawaii - The No. 2 Stanford women's water polo team defeated No. 12 Indiana 4-2 at the Aloha Classic on Sunday. The win improves the Cardinal's record to 13-2 this season.

The Hoosiers were even with the Cardinal heading into the final period of play before a pair of Stanford goals sealed the Hoosiers' fate.

The Cardinal struck first in the game as they scored with 2:53 remaining in the opening frame. Indiana junior Krista Peterson was whistled for an ejection, and Stanford's Lauren Faust netted the first goal just 12 seconds later with a six-on-five advantage.

Stanford extended its lead to two with a goal at the 5:21 mark of the second period. Christina Hewko scored the goal as the Cardinal led 2-0. IU responded with a goal before the end of the half. The Hoosiers drew a foul and a four-meter penalty shot out of a timeout. Junior Hoosier Kandace Waldthaler netted the goal off the penalty shot to draw IU within one.

The Hoosiers wasted little time knotting the match up out of the locker room. Waldthaler struck again scoring her second goal of the game less than a minute into the third period.

Stanford took the lead for good on a goal by Katie Hansen with 5:13 remaining in the match. The goal came with the Cardinal on a six-on-five advantage. Luber scored the Cardinal's final goal with 31 seconds remaining for the final margin.

The Cardinal return to the Farm to play an exhibition match versus the U.S. National Team at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 27 at Avery Aquatics Center.
