Redwood Shores, CA - The defending IRA National champion lightweight women's varsity took top honors in it's division with a 10-second victory over the Stanford women's lightweight eight at the Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic at the Redwood Shores Lagoon, March 28. Strong crews from California took top honors in the five other men's and women's open weight divisions that were contested. All six of the champion crews were undefeated in three dual races raced over the two-day regatta.
In the men's varsity event, No. 3t Cal defeated No. 3t Princeton by seven seats to take top honors in the most anticipated race of the day. No. 16 Stanford looked to upset No. 9 Yale, however, once the Bulldogs got some separation, the Cardinal could not recover. In the other men's varsity race No. 7 Navy defeated No. 17 Penn for it's second win in three races at the Windermere Crew Classic.
In women's varsity racing No. 6 Stanford was upended by Cornell which should find itself in the Top 20 next week. The varsity women's title was decided when No. 11 California defeated No. 7 Virginia by a boat-length. It was the Bears second victory in as many days over Top 10 crews. No. 8 Michigan State defeated No. 15 Washington State in the other women's varsity race.
While the Princeton Tigers taking top honors in the women's lightweight division, Harvard, rowing in Black and White as Radcliffe, defeated Georgetown by one length.
"I believe that for the second consecutive year the Windermere Collegiate Crew Classic can be looked upon as a great success with high caliber crews from across the nation," said Craig Amerkhanian, Stanford's Director of Rowing and men's head coach. "With a field this deep at an early season regatta, there are bound to be some bumps in the road, however, win or lose, the crews that raced today will be better prepared for the championship regattas at the end of the season."
