Cardinal knock off No. 14 UC Davis

March 5, 2004

DAVIS, Calif. - The No. 2 Stanford's women's water polo team defeated No. 14 UC Davis at Schaal Aquatics Center on Friday. The Cardinal scored four first quarter goals and then held off the Aggies the rest of the way to claim the victory. Four other Stanford players tallied goals and goalkeeper Meridith McColl had five saves on the day.

After Davis' Annie Preble scored at 5:44 in the first quarter to give the Aggies a 1-0 lead, Stanford responded by posting four goals in the ensuing four minutes to put the game seemingly out of reach. The Aggies were not deterred and scored two goals in the second period. Stanford matched with three of their own and took a 7-3 lead into halftime.

Stanford goalkeeper McColl held Davis to only two goals in the second half; the Cardinal scored once during that span. That goal came in the fourth quarter on an impressive cut by Wendy Watkins with 5:00 left in the game that gave the Cardinal their only second half goal and put the game further out of reach.

The win improved Stanford's record to 9-2, 2-0 in MPSF play.

The Cardinal return to the Farm to host two matches this weekend: Saturday, March 6 at 7 p.m. against the Aztecs of San Diego State and Sunday, March 7 at Noon versus the Arizona State Sun Devils.
