STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 2 Stanford women's water polo team ended the 2004 home season on a high note with an 18-5 victory over Pacific at Avery Aquatics Center on Saturday. Sophomores Nancy El-Sakkary and Scotti Shafer led the Stanford charge with three scores each. With the win, the Cardinal improve their record to 16-3 overall and 8-1 in MPSF action.
Stanford held the Tigers scoreless in the first period, while notching scores from freshman Alison Gregorka and consecutive goals from Shafer. The Cardinal made the most of the second period, heading into the half leading 10-1. Julia McKinney, Shafer, Shannon Avrett, Hannah Luber and Lauren Faust combined for seven Stanford scores in the second period.
The Tigers posted their biggest numbers in the third period with three goals (Amanda Tucker 2, Morgan Diehl 1), but could only come within 10 points of the Cardinal heading into the final period of play. Stanford was able to notch an additional four scores in the fourth period to take the win 18-5.
Cardinal goalkeeper Amanda Matuk recorded four saves, while Pacific goalie Danielle Sartori posted six stops.
Stanford wraps up regular-season action on the road against UCLA at 1 p.m., on April 18, and at San Jose State on April 23, at 4 p.m.
