LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The No. 2 Stanford women's water polo team defeated the No. 3 UCLA Bruins 5-3 at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center in Los Angeles on Sunday. The win improves the Cardinal record to 17-3 overall and 9-1 in MPSF action.
Stanford got on the board first after eleven seconds had elapsed in the first period with a goal from freshman Christina Hewko. The Cardinal extend its lead to 2-0 with a goal from Laurel Champion at the 4:33 mark. UCLA answered with goals by Lauren Heineck and Kristina Kunkel knotting it at 2-2 after one period.
Stanford held the Bruins scoreless in both the second and third periods, while notching scores from Alison Gregorka and Katie Hansen.
Entering the final period Stanford held a 4-2 lead and Kelty Luber would score one more goal with 1:32 left to put the game further out of reach. A goal from Bruin Katherine Belden with fifteen seconds remaining was too little too late as UCLA suffered a 5-3 defeat.
The Cardinal head to San Jose to take on San Jose State on April 23 at 4 p.m. for their last regular-season game before the MPSF Tournament on April 30-May 2.
