No. 2 Stanford Ends Regular Season with Win

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The No. 2 Stanford women's water polo team ended the 2004 regular season with an 8-3 win over No. 11 San Jose State on Friday. The win improves the Cardinal's record to 18-3 overall and 10-1 in MPSF action. Lauren Faust led the squad with two goals.

Stanford took an early lead with Faust's first goal at 5:39 in the first period, but the Spartans answered with a score 11 seconds later to tie the score at 1-1. A goal from freshman Christina Hewko in the final 40 seconds of play in the first period would give the Cardinal a 2-1 lead.

The Stanford defense held SJSU to a single goal in the second period, while the Cardinal tallied three to take a 5-2 advantage at half.

The third period was scoreless before Stanford's Alison Gregorka increased the Cardinal lead with a goal at 1:03. Two more scores, from Faust and Hannah Luber, in the final period sealed the victory for Stanford.

Cardinal goalie Meridith McColl notched seven saves. Stanford's Amanda Matuk entered the game in the fourth period to tally a save and allow one goal.

Stanford competes in the 2004 MPSF Tournament as the No. 2 seed in Los Alamitos, Calif., April 30-May 2.
