STANFORD, Calif. (AP) - John Mayberry, Jr. hit a monstrous home run and drove in three runs to lead Stanford to a 7-2 victory over Saint John's in an elimination game of the Stanford Regional on Saturday night.
Chris Minaker also hit a home run and drove in two runs as the Cardinal (49-13) advanced to Sunday's championship game against Long Beach State. Stanford would have to beat the 49ers twice to advance to a Super Regional next weekend.
Matt Leva (6-2) threw his first career complete game, allowing two runs on seven hits with a walk and five strikeouts to gain the victory. His previous best was four innings.
Matt Toscani (5-2) took the loss after giving up six runs _ two earned _ on seven hits over six innings. He walked three and struck out two.
PJ Antoniato and Greg Thomson each had two hits for the Red Storm (37-23), who were eliminated in their first NCAA tournament since 1997. Jim Martin and Joe Burke drove in runs for Saint John's.
Mayberry, who tripled home a run in the first, hit a ball an estimated 500 feet for his 15th homer of the season, a two-run shot in the fifth that cleared the light stand beyond the left field fence.
Jed Lowrie led off the ninth with his 17th homer of the season.
Chris Carter also drove in a run for the Cardinal. Brian Hall collected three hits.
Saint John's committed five errors in the game.
