Seattle, Wash. - The Stanford women's gymnastics team was defeated by No. 18 ranked Washington in the squad's season opener, falling 192.825-192.425 before 1,819 fans at Bank of America Arena in Seattle on Friday night. Freshman Liz Tricase was outstanding in her collegiate debut, capturing the all-around title with a score of 39.050.
Five Stanford freshmen competed for a banged up Cardinal squad, with Tricase and Lauren Elmore capturing two of the top three spots in the all-around. Tricase grabbed the top spot in the all-around by finishing first on vault with a score of 9.850, and first on bars with a 9.825. Elmore claimed third place in the all-around, aided by a fourth place finish on bars (9.700).
The Huskies topped the Cardinal on vault, 48.425-48.075, despite Tricase finishing in first place in the event. Stanford rebounded to win on the parallel bars, with Washington being forced to count a fall towards their score and Tricase leading the way to edge the Huskies 48.000-47.975. Junior Glyn Sweets tied for fourth on the bars with a score of 9.725, and sophomore Stacy Sprando captured seventh on the bars with a 9.650.
Washington set a team season-high in winning the beam, 48.600-47.650, before the Cardinal put on a solid performance in winning the floor exercise by a score of 48.700-47.825. Stanford captured five of the top eight spots on the floor, with Tricase and junior Natalie Foley tying for second place by recording 9.800 scores. Freshman Stephanie Gentry tied for fifth on the floor with a score of 9.725, and freshman Alex Pintchouk rounded out an excellent showing for the Cardinal by finishing seventh with a score of 9.700. Washington's Tacia LaBatte posted a 9.850 on the floor to claim first place.
Freshman Aimee Precourt also made her collegiate debut, competing on the balance beam for the Cardinal.
Washington's Brittney Brabec recorded a score of 38.675 to finish second in the all-around, while teammate Natalie Gillan captured fourth place with a 37.175.
Stanford returns to The Farm for its home opener against Oregon State next Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Burnham Pavilion.
