Cal Edges Stanford at Cardinal Open

Stanford, Calif. - Last week, the Cardinal upset California in Haas Pavilion. Tonight, the Bears took advantage of Stanford's mis-steps on high bar and captured the Cardinal Open crown. Seventh-ranked California topped the collegiate field tonight with a score of 215.625, while fifth-ranked Stanford finished second with a total of 213.525. The Cardinal Open All-Star team, comprised of the top competitors from last night's Level 10 Club competition finished in third place with a 204.025, besting No. 15 Air Force (185.6) and Washington (179.475).

The Cardinal's standout freshmen swept the top-three collegiate all-around spots, while Gregory Ter-Zakhariants, who signed a National Letter of Intent with Stanford in November, posted a second-place finish in the all-around with a 53.425 along with a trio of top-three finishes on individual events.

David Sender (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) captured the all-around title with a score of 53.75. He also won two individual events, tying for first on rings with a career-best 9.75 and claiming the crown on vault with a 9.45. Sender also posted a third-place finish on floor, posting a 9.3. Jason Shen (Newton, Mass./Newton North) took third place in the all-around with a 51.625 and added a third-place finish on parallel bars with a 9.025. Claiming fourth place in the all-around was Sho Nakamori (Albany, Calif./Albany), who posted a 51.3 while snagging the title on p-bars with a 9.2.

The Cardinal will compete again in two weeks as Stanford travels to Las Vegas for the Winter Cup. On Feb. 12, the Cardinal and Golden Bears will face off for the third time this season as Cal plays host to Stanford and Ohio State at 7 p.m.Top Individual & Team Finishers
