Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford women's gymnastics team sent 1,066 fans home happy, coming from behind to defeat No. 14 ranked Oregon State in the team's home opener at Burnham Pavilion on Friday night, 193.125-192.350. All four events and the all-around were won by Cardinal freshmen, and Alex Pintchouk became the second straight freshman to capture an all-around title, scoring a 38.675 to place first.
Oregon State started the meet strong on the uneven bars, posting a team score of 48.525 to edge the Cardinal. The Beavers held a slim 96.550-96.525 lead after both teams competed on vault and bars, but Stanford began to separate itself on the balance beam by receiving the top four scores in the event, and earning a team mark of 48.500 to take a 145.025-144.550 lead after the third rotation. Stanford sealed the win on the final rotation by registering a 48.100 on the floor exercise, while Oregon State received a 48.00 on the beam.
Pintchouk was consistent throughout the meet, edging teammate Liz Tricase to win the all-around. The Mt. Laurel, NJ native got stronger as the evening progressed, starting the meet with a 9.525 score on the vault, before receiving a 9.650 on the bars. The freshman recorded a 9.725 on the balance beam, before capping the night off with a 9.775 on the floor exercise.
Tricase was impressive once again, scoring a 9.950 on the uneven bars and registering a 9.900 on the vault, taking first place and setting team-highs for the season in both events. Tricase finished second to Pintchouk in the all-around, recording a score of 38.525.
Freshman Stephanie Gentry electrified the crowd with her floor routine, receiving a 9.850 to place first in the event, while freshman Lauren Elmore received a high score of 9.750 on the beam. It marked the second straight week that Elmore had posted the highest team score on the beam, and the freshman finished third in the all-around with a 38.000 score.
Junior Glyn Sweets was solid in three events for Stanford, scoring a 9.825 on vault, a 9.800 on bars, and a 9.700 on the beam. She tied for second with Oregon State's Angela Morales on the vault, and tied with OSU's Chrissy Lamun for second on bars.
Oregon State did not have an all-around competitor, but Morales was among the leaders in a couple of events. In addition to tying for second in the vault, she tied Elmore for fourth in the floor exercise with a 9.725 score. Freshman Megan Devencenzi placed second in the floor exercise with a 9.800, while senior Therese Videan came in fourth on bars with a 9.725.
Freshman Tabitha Yim made her first appearance of the season for the Cardinal, performing an exhibition routine on bars.
Stanford heads back out on the road next week, traveling to Mount Pleasant, Michigan to meet Central Michigan University for a dual meet on Friday.
