Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford women's gymnastics team fell to UCLA at Maples Pavilion on Friday evening, 196.300-194.625. Freshman Liz Tricase returned to the competition floor after missing last week due to injury, and captured first on the uneven bars against the Bruins.
The Cardinal started off the evening on a good note, registering a season-high 49.000 score on the vault as a team. Tricase led the way for Stanford, finishing second to UCLA's Kate Richardson with a score of 9.900. The Bruins held a narrow advantage after the first rotation, as UCLA scored a 49.075 on the uneven bars to start the evening. The Cardinal excelled on the uneven bars in the second rotation, notching a season-high 49.250 mark. Tricase claimed first place in the event with a 9.925, while freshman Tabitha Yim tied Bruin Tasha Schwikert for second with a score of 9.900. At the midway point of the meet, UCLA held a narrow 98.300-98.250 advantage.
The Bruins began to pull away during the third rotation, registering a 49.225 team score on the floor exercise, while the Cardinal posted a 47.550 on the balance beam. The top three finishers in the floor exercise were from UCLA, as Kristen Maloney and Kate Richardson tied for first with a 9.925 score. Yim, Lauren Elmore, and Stephanie Gentry were the highest Stanford finishers on the floor exercise, as the three tied for fourth place with identical 9.825 scores. The Cardinal struggled on the beam, recording a team mark of 47.550, with junior Glyn Sweets posting a team-high 9.725 in the event.
Junior Natalie Foley competed in the all-around for the second straight week, and finished fifth with a score of 38.400. Foley registered personal season-high on vault with a 9.800 score, and tied her personal season-high with a 9.825 on uneven bars.
Tricase, who did not perform last weekend due to injury, returned for Friday's meet and competed in the vault, bars, and floor against the Bruins. Besides winning the bars event, Tricase placed second on vault with a 9.900 and also competed on floor for the first time since February 4th.
Elmore was Stanford's top all-around finisher, posting a 38.700 mark to place fourth. Elmore scored a 9.675 on beam to finish fifth and tied for fourth on floor with a 9.825.
The Bruins captured the top three spots in the all-around, with Tasha Schwikert winning the title with a 39.400 score. Schwikert's sister, Jordan, placed second with a 39.175 mark, and Kristen Maloney took third with a 39.150 score.
UCLA junior Kate Richardson captured first place on the vault with a 9.925, and first on beam with a 9.900.
The Cardinal, who will compete at home in each of the next two weekends, welcome Arizona State to Burnham Pavilion next Friday at 7:30 pm.
